Two-Factor Authentication with KeyGuard

Blue Ridge Networks two-factor authentication delivers a much more effective level of user authentication than password-only solutions. By requiring multiple proofs of identity—in this case something you know (a password) and something you have (a token diskette or USB KeyGuard)—it ensures that only authorized users have access to your network.

Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) Strength

Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) relies on the mathematics of extremely large prime numbers to create a unique, digital identity for each user and BorderGuard on the network. Each digital identity has a two part key; one part is private and the other part is “public” and is transmitted to the BorderGuard.

The complex formulas associated with PKI certificates ensure that only the intended recipient can view data and that the recipient can be certain of the identity of the sender. The public key cannot be used to calculate the private key and brute force guessing of the private key is, for all practical purposes, impossible.

Locked Credentials

Blue Ridge Networks protects the user’s private key by embedding it in a special authentication diskette or USB smart card that each user receives. These items cannot be duplicated and the user’s credentials cannot be extracted or otherwise exported from these secure devices.

Access to the user's credentials requires both physical access to the token and knowledge of a secret password managed by Blue Ridge Networks. Without the password, a lost or stolen token is useless. Likewise, without the token, the password is useless. The result is that access to the Blue Ridge Networks cryptographic system requires strong two-factor authentication.

Revocable Credentials

A user’s credentials can be immediately revoked in the event that a token becomes lost or compromised. The Blue Ridge Networks use of PKI provides strong authentication, removes the management hassles associated with password schemes, and guards against security compromises.
